A flash flood warning has been issued for parts of Letcher County, Kentucky, as thunderstorms produce heavy rainfall and create the potential for dangerous flash flooding.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, the warning covers northwestern Letcher County along with portions of southwestern Knott County and east-central Perry County. The alert is in effect until 6:45 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, September 23.
Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area, with up to 2.5 inches of rainfall already reported. Officials warned that flash flooding is ongoing or could begin shortly, particularly around small creeks and streams, highways, streets, underpasses, and other low-lying or poorly drained areas.
Residents and motorists in affected areas are urged to take the warning seriously and avoid flooded roads. The National Weather Service advises people to turn around and not drown, noting that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
Residents should continue monitoring official weather alerts and be prepared to move to higher ground if flooding threatens their location.
