John Baker leaves behind a remarkable legacy of public service, resilience, and devotion to his family. For nearly 28 years, he served the residents of Pembroke Pines as a police officer before his death, earning the respect of colleagues and a community he worked tirelessly to protect.
Baker joined the Pembroke Pines Police Department in 1994 and served in numerous roles throughout his career, including road patrol officer, field training officer, master patrol officer, public information officer, traffic homicide investigator, and traffic unit sergeant. He was also a founding member of the department’s Crisis Response Team, created to support first responders during times of tragedy.
Traffic safety was particularly important to Baker. He regularly worked with Mothers Against Drunk Driving and volunteered at its events. His commitment to helping others continued beyond his official duties.
Outside policing, Baker was a devoted father to three children. He enjoyed traveling and music and frequently attended concerts with his family.
His life changed dramatically after an on-duty motorcycle crash on August 10, 2019, when a car turned into his path. The crash left him with critical injuries affecting his speech and movement. With perseverance, family support, and medical care, Baker regained limited motor skills.
He continued serving his community despite those challenges, participating in charity races through Special Compass and the Special Olympics Torch Run.
